Spore Print

A beginner’s notebook of fungi found, checked twice, and mostly left where they grew.

Who writes here

I started picking wild mushrooms three autumns ago, which makes me a beginner and likely to stay one for a while. I live in a terraced house with a small back yard, a shelf of field guides and a kitchen windowsill where spore prints dry on sheets of white and black paper. Most of what I find comes home only as a photograph and a page of notes.

I write here to keep myself honest. Each entry records what I found, which features I checked, what I ruled out and why, and the handful of species I am confident enough to cook. If a note says I left something in the ground, that is the point of the note, not a failure.
